"Skakklubben af 1968" was founded in 1968 and we have just celebrated our 40th anniversary. We are still going strong and are among the biggest chess clubs in Denmark. At the time of writing we are 94 members.

You can find us every Monday from around 6:30 pm (please check the calendar for the exact time) at "Studenternes Hus", Nordre Ringgade, Århus, which is part of the university campus. Our playing venue is no doubt among the most attractive in Denmark and we boast chess sets and clocks of the highest standards.

For the 2008-2009 season we have five teams competing in the Danish Team Tournaments. Our first team is playing in Denmark's top league, Xtracon-Skakligaen, and has represented Denmark at the prestigious European Club Cup on two occasions. Our second team is playing in the 1st division, the third is in the Master league and the fourth and fifth in the B and C - leagues respectively. Thus, Sk1968 is well represented in team matches at every competitive level and we have players at every level from beginners to masters.

In spring we play for the club championship in groups of eight based on rating, and in autumn we play a Swiss tournament over seven Mondays. Apart from these tournaments we have thematic evenings where a strong player is invited to give a lecture on an interesting topic, or simultaneous displays where perhaps 10 or 20 of our members play against one very strong player.

During the year we arrange blitz, rapid chess and rated tournaments open to all players, and we facilitate training for all members. We have recently aquired a pc and projector together with various chess programs and an electronic chess board, and we intend to broadcast live games from major tournaments whenever possible.

Although there is great focus on serious chess in SK 1968, social events are equally important. The friendly environment around the university bar, located in the same building, is an important element of our club culture. Also worth mentioning is the traditional Christmas dinner in December which would be a shame to miss.

Our ambition is that every player, regardless of rating or experience, should feel welcome in our club. We strive to be the most interesting, attractive and friendly chess club in Denmark!
